“I woke up with a spectacularful idea”

I love it when items of clothing/accessories have good stories behind them.  This coat is like that.  Way back when my boyfriend and I were first dating, we stopped by a garage sale near his house and spotted this coat.  I couldn’t decide whether or not to buy it, so then he went and bought it for me.  Back then, the faux fur had a long, seventies shag look to it.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about the seventies aspect, and Florida rarely gets cold enough to wear a suede coat. But recently, I got the idea that if I trimmed the fur all around, it would look a bit more modern.  And so it does.  And now I can’t wait for more cold days so I can wear this coat and add more good memories to it.

This was one of those wet, cold days that requires cozy layering.  I’m still not crazy about this red henley fits me (it’s not so flattering to my gut), but with the sweater and the scarf, the unflattering bits are less noticeable.  Still, I feel like I really need to invest in some good winter layering pieces.  Maybe after my ban is over.

And did you notice the new hair?  It’s not a super big change, but I like it.  It’s a bit shorter and a more of a layered bob than what I had before.  Tribeca Hair Salon (where I get my hair cut)  is having a class on how to style your hair with a blow dryer soon.  I think I’ll go, because this cut can have some awesome volume when styled correctly.

Quick Reader Survey

I’m thinking about re-vamping my posts somewhat in the New Year, and I’d love it if you guys could give me some reader feedback.

I’ve noticed that my stats are a lot higher on days that I post Daily Outfits, and these are really my most favorite posts to write, so I’m planning on making them at least five days a week, Monday through Friday.  I’m thinking about adjusting my posting schedule so that the outfits will be something that I have worn either the day before or within the past few days.  Right now my outfit posts are scheduled about a week ahead of time, and while that is convenient, it feels a bit disjointed to me.

I also love writing Etsy Love posts, and definitely will continue with those, because I feel very strongly about supporting the handmade community.

What I’m trying to figure out is what to do with my weekend posts.  These always have the lowest stats and comments, which could result from the fact that people seem to read blogs less on the weekend.  Or it could be that most people just really aren’t interested in that content.

So, my question to you is: do you enjoy reading Shoe Lust posts? Blog project posts such as Wardrobe Inventory and Shopping Ban?  Would you rather just see outfit posts on the weekends?  Or something else in addition to lighter posts like Shoe Lust?

I’ve been considering doing more local store/online store reviews and book reviews for my weekend posts.  Would this be interesting to you guys?

So, anyhow, I’d love to hear your thoughts, because I want this blog to be enjoyable and interesting to my readers.  Feel free to leave on comment with your thoughts/ideas/suggestions etc or send me  an e-mail with the contact box in the upper left-hand corner of the blog.  Thanks!

Shoe Lust: Frye Matilda Double Strap Ankle boots

FRYE Women’s Matilda Double Strap Boot $231 at Amazon

This is one of those beautiful shoes that I can admire from afar, but will likely never wear.  Because let’s face it, if I attempt to walk in a heel that is higher than three inches, I will fall down constantly.  But for those who can handle a pretty intense heel, these are stunning.  I love the color, I love the double buckles and studs.  And ankle boots are perfect for Florida, where it doesn’t get cold enough for knee-high boots very often.

Shopping Ban: Week 19

Just two more weeks and this shopping ban is officially done!  I still haven’t decided exactly what I will be doing in the New Year.  My plan right now is to take the month of January off from any type of ban.  I’ll still have my regular budget, but no restrictions on what I can buy.  I feel like I just need a short break from restrictions to keep from feeling constrained.  Also, I want to take this month to do a super-thorough wardrobe inventory , this time also looking at winter clothes, leisure clothes and work out clothes.

My idea for a possible shopping plan for next year is to try to identify the twenty-two items that I most need, and then buy two items a month for the remaining eleven months of the year.  I would have a set amount that I would be allowed to spend on those two items, but I could buy them anywhere.  I would be emphasizing finding quality pieces that fit real gaps in my wardrobe.  However, part of me worries that I still might feel constrained from the lack of flexibility.

Another possibility is to have another shopping ban focusing on buying second-hand, handmade and local.  I like this idea, because I’d really like to start exploring local boutiques.  It could be blended somewhat with the first idea as well.

The one thing that’s really keeping me from deciding which to go with is my job situation.  I’m working two part time jobs right now, and they are paying my bills alright.  But one of them is grant-funded, and may or may not exist after March.  The other is substitute teaching, which will take a two month break (with no pay) in the summer.  I’m trying to get a full-time, permanent position, but right now I don’t know when that will happen.  If my financial situation changes, for better or worse, my shopping plan will likely change.  Also, I need to start paying off my student loans in February.  So we’ll see – for now I’m not commiting to a new shopping plan/ban yet.

Anyhow, what did I buy this week?  Well it turned out that the beautiful Anthropologie skirt that I ordered last week didn’t fit right, so I took it back.  I think that I just don’t like the way fly-front skirts fit.  That brings my free money back to $57.50.  I bought a pair of heather gray Hue tights while returning the skirt at Anthro, spending $12.50 in free money.  That leaves me with $45 in free money.

To make up for not getting a nice, casual skirt that fit, I found something that I think should work better on Ebay:

Ann Taylor LOFT Denim Skirt  $14 on Ebay

Since I’ve figured out that I don’t like how fly front skirts look on me, I went ahead and bought this side zipper denim skirt on Ebay.  Hopefully, it will work out better for me.  Since it’s second-hand, that’s $14 from my ban money.

I also managed to luck out and find my green Boden skirt I wore the other day in a larger size.  While my skirt looks cute in pictures, it really doesn”t fit very well.  The lining is always riding up.  I found it on Ebay in a larger size, made an offer for $30, and got it!  I think this one will fit a lot better.  That uses up the remaining $25 in ban money, plus $5 of the free money.

I also managed to get some awesome stuff this week without spending money.

I had some giveaway luck:

Ugg Dakota Moccasins

A few weeks ago, I won an Ugg giveaway over at Pomegranate and Patchouli.  I originally wanted to get the Classic Cardi boots or the Short Uggs, but the prize was a $100 credit towards a pair of Uggs on Shopbop.  I would have had to spend extra money to get either of those boots, and that’s money that I just don’t have right now.  So I opted for these fantastic slippers, and I adore them.  My feet always get cold around the house at night, but not with these babies on!

I had a trip to Revolve Clothing Exchange this past week as well.  I had brought in some items, and I had a good bit of store credit.  So I got: two t-shirts (including the one I wore yesterday), a skirt, a headband, a pair of earrings and a brooch, all without spending a dime!  I love exchange stores.

Hue Tights from Anthro, Headband, Earrings and Brooch from Revolve

Mix Noveau Skirt

Gap Striped Tee

So after all that, I still have $40 in free money and no ban money.  Two more weeks to go!

“Drifted on the dancing breeze”

This outfit was all about comfort chic.  I was tired, I had a long day of work ahead of me, and I really felt more like staying in bed and reading all day.  But I don’t get sick days, and getting a paycheck is pretty important, so I needed to find a way to feel comfy at work while still looking presentable.  On days like this, I will often go straight to jeans and flats with a pretty blouse.

This blouse is a little slouchier than most of my clothes, and it’s a gorgeous, dark teal-green color.  It seemed like the perfect thing for today, since it’s basically a t-shirt with some interesting details.  I added to cardigan to polish it up a bit.  Combine that with a fun headband, nice earrings, jeans and patent black flats, and I felt comfy and stylish.

I’ve noticed lately that my comfort outfits tend to be the ones that take the least amount of thinking to put together.  A dress with flat boots and leggings, jeans and a nice blouse, etc.  I prefer to be less complicated on my days when I really feel more like staying home.

“All I want is to play”

This outfit made me feel fun and playful all day.  That full Boden skirt is oh-so-fun to twirl in, and wearing the tunic layered underneath the skirt helped me to keep warm while not having a thousand crazy mismatched layers on (which was my original outfit).  Unfortunately, after spending a day in this outfit, I’ve come to accept the fact that this skirt really is a size or two small.  I thrifted it for only a couple of dollars, so I’m not crushed.  It has a small tear, so I can’t really re-sell it on Ebay.  I’m going to see if I can alter it to fit me a bit better.  Otherwise, there is one on Ebay right now at the right size, if I’m willing to spend about $50.  I’ll try altering it first, and then we’ll see.

This outfit also gave me an opportunity to debut my new Dansko Sallys, which the lovely people at Dansko graciously gave to me for free.  These shoes have so many amazing re-mixing possibilities.  They’re very comfy, and I can tell that they’re going to work equally well with dresses/skirts and pants.

I think your clothes should make you feel happy.  If they don’t, then you should find some that do.  It’s not about price so much as it is about what makes you feel good when you wear it.

“Notice the good stuff”

This outfit is the official outfit debut of my new Fluevog Heather boots.  And let me say, they were worth every penny (and worth cheating on my ban).  They are comfortable, they keep my feet warm, the color is fantastic, the brogue details make them very unique.  Yep.  I adore these boots.

The blouse I’m wearing here is something I got at the clothing swap I went to a few weeks ago. Originally I wasn’t going to keep it, but then I changed my mind and I’m glad I did.  It has a bit more distressing in the screen printing than I’d prefer, but the fit is fantastic, and it’s very comfortable.

“All that cold, cold wet day”

Lately there have been quite a few cold and rainy days here in Tampa.  It presents an interesting challenge for me, as I’m still learning how to be stylish in chilly weather.  For this day, I figured that wrapping myself up in a cashmere blend cardigan and a pashmina scarf.  This scarf is fast becoming one of my everyday pieces.  I bought it in Chinatown when I went to New York City last year.  That was the day I first tried on the goldenrod Fluevog Malibrans.  I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much on a pair of shoes at the time, so I consoled myself by buying a scarf that I knew would match them when I bought them eventually.

I love wearing items that have stories attached to them.  It feels so much more meaningful that something bought at a big box store on an average weekend.  That’s why I love to buy clothes and accessories when on vacation.  Everytime I wear them, I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I bought them.  Or when it’s something handmade, I can think about the artist that created the item (or the time I spend making it, in the case of this cardigan).  I think that’s a good goal to set: cultivate a more meaningful wardrobe.

Shoe Lust: Dansko Solitaire

Dansko Women’s Solitaire Clog $114 at Amazon

When Dansko graciously offered to send me a free pair of shoes, these were my first choice.  Unfortunately, they were out of my size at the time.  The actual shade of the blue in these shoes really varies from one website to the other, but I’m guessing that it’s somewhere between a dark blue-black and navy.  I love the stitch detailing on the mary jane strap, they have the comfy Sausilito sole with just enough height to elongate the leg a bit and still be super-comfy.  And the dark blue color could really be an intersting accent in outfits.  They would look great on their own, with tights or even with handknit socks. I could see myself wearing these a ton.
